Michael Pachter says Xbox Scorpio over-engineered while confusing console with Oculus Rift
When it's not Tim Sweeney going full Alex Jones in the gaming industry, we have Michael Pachter proving that not everyone has all their ducks in a row. During an interview with The 1099, Pachter was asked what he thought about Project Scorpio, and what it would mean for the industry as a whole. According to Pachter, Project Scorpio seems to be a console that is both "over-engineered" and seemingly incapable of achieving native 4K visuals because "Oculus isn't even 4K". I swear, you can't even make these quotes up. He said:
"I'll wait and see what Scorpio is and what it's priced. But from what I've read, it's probably over-engineered. I'll believe it will run a game at full 4K…except, do we really need that? And I get the PlayStation 4 Pro is weaker, but there's a lot of room between 1080p and 4K. 1080p is two million pixels, 4K is eight million pixels. My understanding is that Oculus runs at 2.6 million pixels, so Oculus isn't even 4K. So when they say Scorpio will be 4K, if Oculus with a $1,500 PC can't be 4K, do you really believe Scorpio, at $400-500 can be 4K? I don't know, I want to wait and see. So it sounds great, and everyone is excited, but…who has a 4K TV?"
--Michel Pachter ( AKA Mãe Dinah)
Let's start off with the oddest statement first which possibly proves Pachter may not be of sound mind. He stated that the Oculus Rift needs to be connected to a $1,500 machine, and even then can't render games at 4K. This statement makes no sense since the Oculus Rift doesn't have a 4K display. On top of that, virtual reality games need to render at a higher frame rate. Resolution usually takes a hit in that case.
Last holiday season Pachter was quoted as saying that gamers would buy the "bargain" PlayStation 4 Pro in droves. After less than stellar sales, he suddenly changed his mind on 4K and stated that since the Xbox Scorpio would do native 4K, nobody owns a 4K set. The 4K market is booming and in 2017 millions of gamers will own 4K displays. That's not all though, during the Cloud Gaming Summit in 2015 he said that console makers should focus on 4K and 8K upgrades. It's odd that he's flip-flopping now and using terms like "over-engineered". How is being "over-engineered" a detriment? It's a massive advantage if you ask any sane individual. What do you think about Pachter's statements? Let us know. It's either hypocrisy or idiocy at its finest.
